Bandung, 1993
Widi Pangestu is a visual artist and papermaker whose practice is rooted in a deep engagement with traditional papermaking, both as a material and a process. Treating paper not just as a surface, but as a material in its own right, he pushes its formal boundaries and reimagines it as a medium capable of carrying memory, meaning, and cultural narratives.
Working primarily with plant-based fibers, Widi researches, harvests, and processes raw materials by hand, crafting sheets of paper that retain the marks of their origin. This tactile, process-led approach allows him to explore themes of materiality and sustainability, especially how our choices in working with natural materials reflect broader relationships between humans and the natural world.
His recent research focuses on traditional papermaking practices across Southeast Asia, mapping how knowledge, place, and material come together within local traditions. For Widi, each sheet of handmade paper becomes a vessel, a physical documentations between human and nature shaped by an anthropological conversation.
Through this artistic practice, paper becomes a bridge, connecting traditional knowledge with contemporary approach, and opening space for new dialogues between past, present, and future.
