Biography

Indonesian husband and wife Putud utama (b. 1991) and Rara Kuastra (b. 1992), collaborate and work together as an artist under the name TEMPA since the end of 2015. As a husband and wife artist team, Tempa’s paintings, murals, and installation art are a journey of telling stories and understanding that the micro things we experience are a process towards “keselarasan”, which means harmony, harmonious. We started the brainstorming process by making lots of sketches, drawings, acrylic on paper, and digital paintings before we put them together and collaged them into one whole artwork, it’s a fun and critical process for both of us to merge ideas. Through this process, Tempa’s works employ nuanced, decorative, and narratives that evoke an inquiry about seeking harmony, where we live into global issues. We often use mediums of canvas, fabric, wood, brass, aluminum, and brass in our works to create installations, murals, and paintings that utilize personal history as an entry point to discuss “keselarasan” The message we want to convey in each of Tempa’s works is that everyone has a story, from the goods we own, the places where we live, the friends around us, the family we love, the skills we have to develop our careers, and the events we experience every day are some examples of the results of our efforts to experience and interpret “current” events. Naturally, our life journeys will be interconnected and harmonious in forming patterns in the universe.
