Yogyakarta, 1981
Theresia Agustina Sitompul—or in short, Tere, as she is usually called by her close friends—spent her art education from undergraduate to Masters level at the Indonesian Art Institute, Yogyakarta . She is currently lecturing at Indonesian Art Institute, Surakarta, in the Faculty of Fine Arts, Printmaking. And since 2001 until now become the founder and member of Studio Grafis Minggiran, Yogyakarta. In her earlier works, Tere placed focus on Printmaking, one of the media that she still employs in her art to this day, including etching, drypoint and carbon print techniques. The works feature female figures that look small and frail, printed in subtle colors and created using fine marks made of repetitive rhythmic lines on the surface of the paper.
After college, Tere’s works began to develop with the involvement of sculpture, mixed media, and also presented in the form of installations. Along with this transition, she also experienced major changes in her personal life, before and after the birth of her daughter, Blora Frida on May 10, 2008. These emotionally charged personal experiences had started to affect important themes of her work, which originally began as an effort to find answers to other emotional problems. Her exploration of themes have now moved on to the increasingly complex personal issues related to her role as a woman, wife, and mother. She started to investigate a whole range of personal emotions and thoughts that exist in the close relationships of mother and child as seen in most of her works presented in her solo exhibition in 2009 : Confessions (Of an Artist as a Young Mom). This exhibition not only presents Tere’s strength as an artist with good mastery of graphic prints, but more importantly, it shows her strength in presenting complex ideas in terms of both theme and form.
From the experience Confessions (Of an Artist as a Young Mom), Tere continued to extend her explorations further towards the question of human existence in association with the natural environment, the world in which humans regenerate, in a series of coexistential procedures, from generation to generation. Her exploration over these issues brought Tere to use Bible stories. Narratives about human existence seem to always connect to spiritual awareness. Such issues have been observed to be more evident in recent works like: Noah’s Ark ( 2011) , Chapter IV ( 2012), Noah’s Ark II ( 2012-13). And commission work for Children Art Space UOB – Museum MACAN (Modern and Contemporary Art in Nusantara) Tere makes Installation with the theme : Kembara Biru – Travelling Blues (2022). In addition to the depth of themes and issues, these works also show Tere’s sensitivity— and capability—in her choice of materials, techniques and forms to bring out her ideas. And the other exhibitions has held at the Indonesia or over the seas.
