Bukittinggi, 1984
I observe a growing tendency to expose personal and private matters amid the rapid expansion of information transparency. In an era where sharing has become habitual, boundaries are often redefined without reflection. Yet I believe that not everything needs to be made public.
There is value that remains protected within what I describe as the in between, a space that is neither fully closed nor fully open. This space holds a form of awareness, a conscious decision to maintain distance rather than surrender entirely to visibility. It is within this position that I locate my artistic inquiry.
This awareness led me to engage with the concepts of simulacrum and simulacra, particularly the idea that representation can surpass and even replace reality itself. I am interested in how contemporary life is increasingly structured by images, where appearance can carry more authority than lived experience.
In everyday life, images are produced and circulated at an accelerated pace. Layers of signs are continuously reproduced until the distinction between the original and the imitation becomes increasingly difficult to identify. Reality emerges as a construction shaped by symbolic systems, media structures, and collective perception.
Through my works, I construct situations in which viewers recognize that what they encounter is a deliberate formation. I emphasize an understanding of how representation operates. For me, art is a way to reread a reality layered by simulation, while sustaining critical awareness so that we do not entirely accept these constructions as a singular and unquestioned truth.
